I bought a XFX Radeon HD 7870 2GB a while a go, and It's been good, but I'm just wondering if 80 degrees is something to worry about. I was playing Alan Wake, and was hitting around 80 degrees full load.

+1 Cookybiscuit.
You can always set a more aggressive fan profile in Afterburner (excellent freebie BTW) if you remain concerned.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the case, but I can't really do much about that for now. Would increasing the fan speed be any good? If so what would be the ideal speed to set it to, at the moment is 50 percent.

any silicon chip can easily handle upwards of 85c no problem whatsoever... iPhone.. printer... calculator... ps3... pc cpu or gpu etc. getting over 85c one should start to become vigilant and try to find a way to lower the temperature if possible. above 90c is generally a no no altogether.

the real question is how do you know what the "actual" temperature of the silicon chip is? going to computer temperature programs nowadays is decent or within 5-10% accuracy. usually the 24/7/365 for years on end rule of thumb is 80c and below.
