I am looking at getting a new GPU for gaming at 1920x1200 resolution. That is what my monitor maxes out at and I don't plan on upgrading. I'm focusing on the GTX 770 or 780. Maybe the R9 280 or 290, but leaning more towards Nvidia. With that resolution, is there any reason to go up to the 780 as far as performance/dollar is concerned? I want to be able to run BF4 at max settings, without a hitch for example. Both cards are in my budget, but I was wondering if the extra cash could be used elsewhere in my rig, without sacrificing FPS in my games.

The Radeon HD7870 is perfect sweet spot for price, performance ratio. or the new R9 270. i have 2 in crossfire, but i can say that even running on one, games look awesome. COD ghosts at 1080p full settings never drops below 30 fps with a small overclock. Turn a couple of settings down and easily average 60fps

id step up to the 7950 3gb card personally for 170 vs 140 for the 7870.

Indeed i agree if your just after best performance and money not so much an issue, get the best single GPU you can afford. Just saying, the R9 270 is the sweet spot for price+performance ration on AMD side

I suppose the money is less the concern, I just don't want to waste it on excessive power that I won't utilize knowing I am capping my resolution and only using a single monitor. With that said, I don't want to have to turn settings down, I want to be able to play them at a solid 60 FPS on the highest settings.

then go 7950 or if budget allows the 7970 (one of the best available unless you break the $400 mark)

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100351... $239 50 more than 7950 and maybe a 10% difference in gameplay.

Thanks for the input folks. Looks like i'll have to decide between the 7970 or the GTX 770. Any thoughts on that? From what I have been reading, they almost perform identically, just one does better at one game and one does better at another.

that is true. i find that the amd does better in most games but a few specific real heavy games the 770 will win

In the light of latest price-cut for gtx770 / 780 from nVidia's side and new r9 290 from AMD's side, has anything changed?

Planning to build a PC later on in Dec, ready to pay for gtx 780 / non-reference r9 290 (once it comes out), but it probably will be an overkill for single monitor in 1080p res.

And, umm, another question: is there any point in going for SLI with 2 gtx 760 (like MSI Twin Frozr) or some AMD counterparts?

not a great difference i single monitor gaming. can often cause more problems than benefits. a good single card is better in most cases rather than 2 lower grade cards.
