Not the best processor out there, but certainly not that dated. Should be fine for mid-level gaming in most modern titles paired with a 7770. Very new games like Battlefield 4 will suffer for not having more cores. It will be fine for MMOs though.

The 7770 / 7750 / 6670 are the entry level AMD gaming cards of this generation and some games will be bottlenecked by your CPU. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying anything cheaper though. You can always upgrade the motherboard/chip/ram at a later date.

I have a Dell Inspiron 560 with this cpu, not sure about my mobo (if you can look this up for me, I will appreciate it), but with 4 gb ram (4 stick of 1 gb) and 300 watt psu. I currently have a 6670 on it and want to upgrade it to a 7770 (friend is giving it to me). would it work on my Dell Inspiron 560?

PCI Express is pretty much 100% compatible across all generations. You should be capable of plugging in almost any graphics card. Exceptions would be ones that don't fit physically inside the case, but the 7770 is not a large card.
