Hi. I have recently removed and reinstalled my heat sink on my CPU. It worked fine before I did this but now at startup the CPU fan runs extremely fast and a red error message appears on my screen saying this:

CPU fan has failed

Computer will automatically power off in a few seconds

Service PC immediately to prevent damage to the CPU

This shows up in a faded red color.

I think I might need to put new thermal paste on but I am not sure.

Thanks!

Solution
Thermal paste forms a bond between the cpu and heatsink. When you break the seal, you have to clean off all the old dried up paste, and apply some new. That should fix everything up.

When putting on the new thermal paste be very careful you don't use too much. You only need an amount equal to the size of a grain of rice.

You will need to get some new thermal compound to replace the old as jimthenagual has said. Once you have removed the heat sink be sure to clean both the CPU and the heatsink to remove all the old thermal compound . Use rubbing alcohol for this (there is often a little nappy supplied with the new thermal compound for this purpose) Once you have cleaned both points of contact then apply the new thermal compound. I recommend reading the instructions that come with the new thermal compound as the cleaning and application can differ from product to product.
