Older games on newer systems

I'm planning to buy a PC for gaming. The main game in which I am interested is Napoleon: Total War. There seem to be many threads about the problems with that game. I'm worried that I may not be able to play older games on a newer system.

Run them in XP compatibility mode.

Ok thanks. I've read that some of the problems arise because the older games were designed for dual core CPU, and now quad cores are more prevalent. Is that a possibility?

I have never heard of anything like that. If a games is designed for a dual core it will simply use only 2 cores. That is how it works.
