Which Laptop is Better for Gaming?

Hi, recently I've been doing a lot of looking online for a good gaming laptop under $500 CAD. I know that's pretty cheap for a laptop but that's my budget. The problem is for me since I live in Canada is that almost all laptops under $500 US are much higher in Canada, making it hard to find something good. One in particular laptop that I liked was the ASUS K55N-DB81, but it's too much money in Canada so I'm now looking for similar laptops.

Anyway, so now to get to the point, which one of these two laptops would be better for gaming, or what other laptop would be the best for gaming (under $500 CAD).

ASUS K55N-BH81-CB

Lenovo G505

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... a few of the games I'm going to be playing are: Minecraft, DayZ (Standalone & or Arma mod) DOTA 2, League of Legends, and if I'm lucky, maybe Skyrim and Battlefield. I'd like to be able to get at least 25 FPS on these games, and I'm fine playing on low settings if neccesary.

Thanks in advance, bye.

That's strange... I didn't even notice that. So do you think I should go with the ASUS K55N-BH81-CB, or do you think there is a better laptop for gaming in my price range?

Specs-wise this is worth the extra $65. It's new and a great price and under $500 CAD.

HP Envy dv7-7227cl with A10-4600M -- 8GB RAM -- discrete Radeon HD 7660G
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8669436&sku=HQR-102107623

I bet ASUS has an all around better build quality and runs cooler but the HP will have the manufacture's original warranty.

If $400 bucks is your rock bottom then the ASUS is the best deal I've seen other then that HP.

Edit: The difference is not that huge between the A8-4500m and the A10-4600m, apparently if you go by this review the A10 - 4600m delivers 24% higher graphics power then the A8 - 4500m mostly because the A10 - 4600m has "384 Radeon Cores" vs the A8 - 4500m's 256 cores. I think that the A10 4600m can do some games, like Skyrim, in Medium with 30+ fps.

What does anyone else think?

Thanks for the answer, I'll definitely check that laptop out. But how you mentioned that the ASUS would have better build quality, run cooler... do you think that the HP would have problems in those aspects? Should I maybe buy a cooler to go with the HP?

Edit: I just noticed that this is on TigerDirect.com, and when I searched for it on TigerDirect.ca, it said that is was out of stock... so do you by any chance know if they ship to Canada on the .com website?

I think you'll be hard pressed to find a good gaming laptop for that price, unfortunately. Don't get your hopes up too high =(

However, some older games you may be fine with. If I were you, I'd check out reviews online for how well they play the game you're interest in and then I might buy a laptop somewhere with a generous return policy to see how it goes.

I understand this, I'm mostly going to be playing simple games like Minecraft. I'd be extremely grateful if I can get some more advanced 3D games to run at an okay FPS on low settings.

I'm sorry, I looked at this
http://www.tigerdirect.com/sectors/help/international.asp

and just thought it meant order online and everything will be cool, I didn't see the link to Tigerdirect.ca, damnit! I spent a lot of time on that.

Call them, if they ship to Canada, you can order it by phone, maybe.

If not Amazon.ca has a refurbished one
http://www.amazon.ca/HP-ENVY-dv7-7227cl-Laptop-Memory/dp/B00ABE3JFS

There is only one left on Amazon

Here is some benchmarks of Crysis 2, Skyrim, Dirt 3 from Tom's
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/a10-4600m-trinity-piledriver,3202-10.html

Edit: I am pretty sure you will be able to run FarCry 3 on low in DirectX9 above 30FPS which is playable btw. Like playing on PS3/XBOX. Battlefield 3 also.

My advice: Save up cash untill you can get a 700 dollar laptop.

None of the laptops mentioned can play the games you want (nevermind newer titles) at anything higher than low.

Use the site notebookcheck.net and in the GPUs, you can see the frames per second of the different models.
The ones in the asus and lenovo you mention bearly play games at low over 25 FPS (some even at ultra like diablo 3, so we can guess how good that game is at graphics).

Anything under 700 dollars is not gonna cut it (unless you get VERY lucky).

Thanks again dude. I'm surprised at the FPS rate for those games on the A10... I'll have a look at that Amazon link. And I'm sorry to ask this question again, but since you said the HP wouldn't have as good build quality or run as cool, do you think that I should buy a cooler or something to go with the HP?

Like I said, I'm fine playing on low settings for newer 3D games, even if I do only get 25-30 FPS at times. Besides, I'm mainly going to be playing Minecraft, which is by no means a game that requires top of the line processors and such.

No problem, did you call TigerDirect? I'm not trying to scare you, it's just that ASUS tends to use better parts but honestly I just read some reviews of the HP Envy DV-7 and also looked through my Consumer Reports and HP seems to be offering very nice desktop replacements.

I wouldn't run out and buy a laptop cooler until I ran some temp monitoring software but perhaps if you plan on marathon Minecraft sessions eventually you will want one because it seems most laptops run hot. Only use it on hard flat surfaces of course, never in your lap, har har.

Bottom line, the review clocked a cpu temp of 48c after prolonged use. To me that is more then fine. It's also nice looking and offers some good features. If you get the HP be prepared to remove all the crap-ware. I think there's a application that automatically removes it.

Alright, thanks again, you've really helped me out here. And I haven't got around to calling TigerDirect yet, I'll do that soon though. My hopes aren't too high though, probably won't ship to Canada. If not I'll just order the one from Amazon.

Hey, sorry I only just noticed this but the Lenovo does say what graphics chipset it has. It's an AMD Radeon HD 8550G. It says when you click specifications. So, if you notice my reply, how would this Lenovo compare to the ASUS and the HP you mentioned?

I don't understand, I swear that link took me to a totally different laptop that was cheaper and Intel.

Either way the 7660g still shows better then 8550m during benchmarks I could find.

HD 7660G
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-7660G.69830.0.html

8550M
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-8550M.84267.0.html

Scroll all the way down to the game benchmarks and use Far Cry 3 and Skyrim as an example. The 7660G even has Crysis 3 on there, granted it's at 28 FPS but it runs on it.

This is my advice, I found an ASUS on Newegg.ca that is within your price range. It's refurbished but it's a good deal.

Thanks man, so that ASUS computer you just recommended, do you say that's one of the best gaming laptops for this price range? I'm sorry I've been asking pretty similar questions over and over again but this is my first time looking for a gaming laptop and I'm not that experienced. Also, it doesn't seem to say if it has an optical drive or not, do you know if it does? Because don't some games require to run a disc to install them?

That's what I meant by "gaming" laptop, and thank you for all your help.
