Transferring old hard drive to new pc

Solution
A good strategy would be to make use of the new system just as you bought it.
Then you can plop the old drive into the new system as an extra, non-primary, drive (for example; instead of the "C" drive the old one would become "D") , and all of your old data files and documents will be available to the new machine.

The manuals for your new system will be able to give you good instructions on how to mount an additional hard drive inside it, and (if it is a good manual) what you have to fiddle with in Windows to make it work just the way you want it to.

If you don't have a new hard drive and a new operating system, moving the old drive into new hardware will be a bit of a headache. It will work, but you will need new drivers for all of the new hardware that your old hard drive (OS) has never seen before.

If my old hard drive is Windows 7 and so is my new one, will it work?

If you are adding the old drive as an extra data drive (not the primary boot device) it will work. It will be easy and quick.

But if you want to use the old drive as the primary, boot device in the new machine it will get really complicated.
For starters, enough of the system would have changed so that the OS will think you are trying to run it on a second computer (which you would be) and refuse to run until you have a chat with Microsoft to sort it out. (be prepared to pay for yet another copy of Win 7) Then more work to load all new drivers for, well.., everything.
