Howdy,

So, I recently (very recently) got myself a new gpu, the GTX 770. I got it on Monday and only got around to putting it in my computer tonight. When I finally plugged everything in, I started my computer, only to find myself stuck on the initial screen, the one before the logo for my mobo flashes. I'm stuck at this screen and I cannot even access the BIOS >=(. Needless to say, I've done everything I could to try and fix it, trawled all the forums, etc. Nothing helped. So, I was wondering if anybody out there knew of something that might help.

P.S. I don't know if this will help, but my old gpu was an AMD 7770 GT. I already uninstalled all the drivers but it didn't help.

sometime you have bios bugs with newer parts. before you put the card in did you see if your motherboard bios was up todate?? you have to pull the gpu and put the old one back in and update it.

There is a thread here where a guy had a similar problem

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1755038/bought-g...

Is your PC a self build or ready made one? By the sounds of that thread a OEM motherboard might not like a different graphics card, can you test the card on the friends PC?

Well guys,

I appreciate the speedy response. I managed to flash my BIOS (had to do quite a bit of digging around to find a USB key) and at least now I can access the BIOS. Other than that, when I exit the BIOS, it goes back the flashing underscore of death.

BTW, my PC is self built, been working fine for about a year now.

What power supply do you have?

I have a Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500 watt.

I know, I know. Ya'll gonna say that I need and 600 watt psu for a GTX 770, but there's no reason mine shouldn't work because the 770 needs 250 watts at most.

Thanks,

I just updated my BIOS using my previous gpu. That's what allowed to access the BIOS in the first place with the 770 plugged in. Any other ideas?

Test the card on another PC to make sure it isn't faulty.

I'd like to but that's not an option since I'm the only PC user in my household.

Then my best guess it is that it is between a faulty card and the power supply, are you using a molex converter for the second 6 pin power slot on the graphics card?

The problem is that if you RMA the card and there is nothing wrong with it, they will charge you a fee for wasting their time. So you have any friends who are also PC gamers that can try out the card for you?

Yeah, I'm using one of the converters. It worked fine when I tried it out with my other gpu. If nothing else works, I'll ask around my friends and see if anyone has a gaming pc. Thanks a lot for the effort mate.

Have you tried to boot in safe mode, then uninstall any current GPU software?

Forgive my ignorance, but how do I boot the computer in safe mode if I can't even get windows to start. Is there a way to do it from the BIOS?

You get into safe mode by pressing F8 after the post screen, and just as it attempts to start loading Windows. Just start pressing F8 over and over after the post screen disappears.

I don't even get as far as the POST screen. After displaying the MSI logo, it immediately go to the blinking cursor in the upper right hand corner.

Are there any beeps or flashing lights in the case?

None that I can see with the case open.

Interesting development:

As I was tinkering with BIOS settings to see if something worked, I told my self "Screw it, I'm gonna restore default settings, see if that does anything". It didn't but I then switched the boot priority to make the booting of my hard-drive the first thing the computer did when it turned on. Surprisingly, it actually did something and woe and behold, windows started and it seems to be working fine. The drivers are installed and it seems to work. Haven taken the time to test it out yet but I'll come back if other problems arise.

Thanks a lot everyone,
Shnurlf
