I would like to use my PC speakers for computer and TV use. I currently have a 5.1 Logitech speaker system which is connected to my MOBO's three 3.5mm ports. Now I also want to use the same speakers to output the sound from my TV. If I buy a Sound Card with an optical in connection, can I use a Toslink cable and connect it from my TV's optical out to the Sound Card's optical in and use my PC speakers to hear sound from my TV?

Solution
You will need to move the speaker connections from the motherboard to the soundcard.
You may find that the only sound cards with optical in are mid and high end and anyway it wouldn't be a very good idea to fit a very cheap sound card as it would likely degrade the overall sound.

Can I buy any cheap sound card with an optical in and it would do the same job as the more expensive sound cards?

I just wonder if I have to reconnect my speaker connections to the new sound card with the "optical in" in order for the tv sound to come out or can I leave the speaker connections on the MOBO and just have the "optical in" connection on the new sound card.

Thanks makkem. This is exactly what I wanted to know prior to investing on a new sound card and not have to buy an AV receiver which significantly cost more.
