i7 4770k
Asus maximus VI hero
120gb ssD samsung / kingston
corsair cx600w
8gb Kingston beast
FD Arc Midi R2

I want to know what benefits both, I'am already leaning towards R9 280x simply because of the price.. I only have 1500$ budget. I really want to go with 780 Ti but the cost will be + 300$ and I will cut down the ssD, basic mobo, etc.

I already knew both will be almost the same on gaming, but probably I'm gonna spend more time 3D designing so I want to know what benefits the most out of 3D max program with those 2 cards.

If the difference is minimal, I rather go with 280x. but I would like to know if 770 will make a huge difference on 3Ds max. thanks in advance.

I would say the R9 280x, it has a wider bus width, more shader units, and generally runs better with both DirectX and OpenGL applications than the GTX 770 I believe, so it will run your 3D modeling apps better. I will edit and bring up the benchmarks when I find them again, gotta dig em up.

there are a few related benches here in anandtech's review of the 280x, look to the compute and synthetics pages

Thanks for the reply :) I will surely get the 280x now

and the thing is, I live in middle east (Bahrain) and to be honest, the prices here are abnormal.. The cheapest 7970 here is 458$ and the price of r9 280x is 352$, Gtx 770 4gb is 450$ (Converted from AED)

as you can see 280x is stupidly cheap than 7970 here... so If gtx 770 have a big performance advantage on 3D programs, ill stretch my budget for sure.

here it was sorry, went to bed without being able to find it but finally did just now! It benches teh R9 260x, 270x, and 280x, and it seems that it's pretty much a wash between the GTX 770 and the R9 280x in productivity related apps, they tested several Autodesk apps (3dMax being one), Luxmark, Bitmining etc, for performances in DirectX, OpenGL, and OpenCL.

With a further look, the GTX 770 performs stronger in the AutoCAD directx benchmark, but the R9 280x performs better in the Maya OpenGL benchmark. I think I'll go out on a limb here and say that they have similar performances but DirectX apps can utilize the GTX's CUDA cores better while the R9 has better OpenGL and OpenCL support.

Edit: it says here on the article I posted that "ratGPU is unique ray-tracing renderer accelerated by OpenCL and available for 3ds Max and Maya" (page 17 on the OpenCL benches, near the bottom), I would think that the AMD R9 should perform pretty damned competitively in 3ds max
