Hi,
A few months ago I noticed my pc case being a little warm on top. I opened it up to find the fan in the psu had stopped working. I took the psu out to clean the fan but it seemed like it had seized up. I bought a new psu with same power rating and installed it.
Since installing it, the PC just turns off randomly (it's Windows 7).
It turns off very randomly - in the middle of watching a film, browsing the net, copying files from one place to another, even when it's I'm not doing anything.
It boots back up instantly. Sometimes it turns off as the windows logo appears on boot, sometimes when windows loads the background program's like avg, etc.
It can turn off anywhere from 30 seconds, a few minutes yet sometimes it will run fine for a few hours or even a week or so. I have it running all the time and it can be 2 weeks before turning off.
I never had this issue before the new psu and I've checked all connections inside the PC and they are fine.
I don't think it's an overheating issue as it can run for 2 weeks before turning off. Then I can turn back on say 12 hours later and it turns off after a few minutes and does so repeatedly yet randomly. But then it could be ok for a few days.
I don't know what's wrong with it

If you give some extra details people will be able to help you better, such as What PSU is it? What components are in your PC?
I recently had a problem with my PSU spiking, It would crash my whole pc close it and force me to reboot and then may work fine for hours on end again I'm not sure if you're having the same problem but it is possible. That said this PSU was 2years old not brand new.

maybe you have a defective unity, if you say this doesn't happen before with the older psu. You can try with other PSU? which brand do you have? and your pc specs

I can't remember was power the psu was. I know it was identical to my old one.
Inside the PC I have a intel celeron e3200, 4gb ram, ati radeon hd 5450 pci-e graphics card, a pci USB card, bluray writer, hard drive. Connected to it I have a wireless keyboard with touchpad, 2 USB hard drives and that's it.

That's weird, you don't need too much power, which brand is your psu? I really think is defect unity.

I seem to recall it being a CIT 300w micro atx psu. I built the PC about 4 years ago. The case came from e buyer with a 300w psu already installed so when I bought the new psu I went with the same power rating.
I use the PC as a media centre under my 42" tv so all I really do with it is watch films, listen to music and surf the net

If it helps I just ran speed fan and these are the readings;

Left side
Fan 1 0rpm
Fan 2 2021rpm
Fan 3 0rpm
Fan 4 0rpm

Right side
Temp 1 -128c
Temp 2 -128c
Temp 3 -62c
Hd0 39c
Hd2 46c
Temp 1 30c
Gpu 52c
Core 0 37c
Core 1 38c

On the temperatures all arrows point down except gpu which has a flame next to it.

The PC has been running fine since starting this tread. I've managed to copy all my files to an external hard drive.
Would reinstalling Windowd make a difference. I know when I've replaced my graphics card in the past, my pc has behaved funny until a fresh install of windows put it all right.
One of the things about the speed fan results is it is showing temperatures for hd0 and hd2 yet I have a 250gb internal hd, plus two external USB ones - a 1tb and a 2tb one yet speed fan is only registering two hard drives?

Just looking at the specs of the CiT psu I have on cclonline and is says it has no pci-e connectors on it. My graphics card is a pci-e one and I can't remember it drawing its power from the old psu?

Well the GPU must be plugged into something if it's on :p . Speedfan doesn't measure temperature of external hard drives, I don't believe. I've looked at the power consumption figures from that GPU as well and it seems a 300w would be fine but maybe you should get a 300w from a more reputable PSU manufacturer.

Also 128 degrees is hella hot. Have you recently cleaned any dust or debris from inside your system, that may be a problem.

HD 5450 don't use pci-e connector (only need 19 watts), the gpu draw the power from the pci-e line from your motherboard. try to find the way to use other psu.

It was cleaned out a few weeks ago when I made sure all connectors were in place. The PC was running fine for a few years until I changed the psu. The case fan appears to be working fine

I have ordered a new psu so I will see what happens with that. The eBay seller offers a 28 day no quibble guarantee so if I have the same issues its not cost me a lot

I've just been trying to backup some if my files to an external hard drive. As I pasted the files the PC turned off again. If it means anything core 0 temp was around 51 and core 1 was 49 when it turned off

It's another CiT one as that's all that's in my price range at the minute and there doesn't seem to be many matx psu's about.

You can use a non micro atx PSU depending on your case you know? I have a standard ATX PSU in my case that has a Matx motherboard. What case do you have?

It's only a small micro atx case. I'm sure a bigger psu won't fit in it. When the motherboard is in, the blu ray write nearly touches the ram.

Ah I see, Maybe the parts in the case are too compact together or something causing poor airflow? Is there a reason you're using a small case? Hopefully the new PSU will solve the PSU issue atleast.

The case is under the tv so I didn't want it to look like a PC. The size and spec hasn't changed in 4 years so I don't think it's a cooling / size issue. I will know if its the psu when the new one arrives at the end of the week

The new psu came a few days ago.It was a different brand to the one I bought previously. I got it fitted last night and the problems persist - turning off randomly. I will reinstall windows tonight and see if it was a software fault. If it still persists could it be the graphics card? Speed fan is seeing the gpu at 54 degrees with a fire icon next to it. The graphics card is still under warranty until the middle of December

54 is fine, I think it might be an issue with motherboard if the problem still persists.

After a reinstall of windows everything was fine until this morning. Whilst browsing through my folders, it turned off again. Powered it back on, it loaded windows and 5 minutes later turned off again. I'm ready for dumping it in the bin
