When my computer is booting up I get to the Windows 7 emblem and then the fan turns on high and the monitor goes black. So it has essentially turned off but the fan is still going high and I have to turn it off at the switch.

It will open in safe mode. Have not downloaded anything lately but scanned it with trend and nothing came up.

Restored to a week ago and it acts the same.

The only thing I did do recently was uninstall a game improperly. It was running and so when I uninstalled it said may not have been done properly. I uninstalled in safe mode again.

Any ideas? I did run a memory test too and nothing came of it.

Did you say it boots in safe mode? Do you have integrated graphics on your board as well as a card?

It sounds like hardware, the fun begins finding the failed componant :)

Open the case when you boot, which fan is running full speed. Is it the CPU fan? usually this is thermal controlled. Check your CPU cooler is attached correctly. Is the gfx card fan? <--- this is my guess, if it boots in safe mode and you have both integrated and discreet graphics depending on the board it might use the integrated graphics in safe mode.

Yes, it boots fine in safe mode and isn't slow. I THINK the faster fan sounds are coming from the video card (gtx 760). He has a lot of fans in there. 2 on the video card, one on the mother board that looks like a cup? a big one in back and one on the power source. tbh, this is his gf and maybe I remember my kittens sticking their tail or nails in the fans and sleeping in there (they don't have hair and its warm in there as he doesn't use a sidemounted wall. So I'm feeling guilty and hoping I could figure it out first.)

Oh dear...

Take a look at the back of the machine, the monitor will be plugged into the graphics card. See if there is an identical connector on the motherboard. Try connecting the monitor to the onboard card and see if it will go into windows.

If all else fails I'm sure he'll be fine about it :)

no signal. It looks like nothing is hooked up to it in the motherboard. there is a second one on the video card too and it gets no signal also. Bummer

Just too many variables to really advise you I'm sorry! It sounds like the graphics card might have an issue but without knowing what componants are in the machine it's difficult to advise how to troubleshoot.

I guess you just need to say sorry and bat your eyelids at him :)
