Hi guys

I am building a very low budget, ITX pc and I will be using it mainly for internet browsing, watching HD movies and very little to none photoshopping. I will have it hooked up with a 32 inch 720p Samsung TV. My problem is that I don't know if an i3 will do the job for me. Any suggestions? I won't probably install a graphics card since I will be using the onboard video of the mobo listed below:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-B75IA-E33-LGA1155-Mini-ITX-...

Thanks in advance!

Well the onboard video is on the CPU, board supports it, and I3 should do it for you, Photoshopping would benefit from I5.

Yeah I understand that but I want to keep the budget as low as possible. I believe it doesn't worth the extra money just for a little use of photoshop.

Your i3 is not powerful enough if you plan on doing gaming or other intensive things, try upgrading to an i5 or an i7.

Ι won't be gaming at all and also I want to keep my budget low.

Then I belief the I3 is a good choice, I run a media server on my home server with Pentium G2020 and it works fine.

I have decided to go with the Intel Core i3 3240 Ivy Bridge. At around £88 I think it's my best choice. What do you think?

Well, you're not planning on gaming, so that will be a very fast processor for what you plan on doing (I have an Athlon ii x2 and it is decently fast)

I appreciate your help but I won't give up on Intel that easy :)

you could use a amd apu a6 would be fine

plus the graphics would probly suit it better since there more powerful then intels current graphics also

Well there is a significant performance difference between the two. Check below.

true but i was going cheap on it you could use a8 5500 65w tp

but the graphics well take it out in graphic tasks

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/25xv4

pass score 4059 so not quite same performance as i3 but better

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A8-5500+APU...

in single tasks isnt best but shines in graphics tasks

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/279/AMD_A8-Series_A8-5...

its a bit of a coin toss in that department or you could wait for kaveri apu which should match i3 or just out pace it which will be out in 2014

Intel cpu is better for CPU intensive tasks. An AMD APU is better generally in graphics and video.

True hence why i say apu it would work for internet browsing and videos will run better and since hes using it on a 32 inch tv the graphics of the intel will not support such a high res but the apu should handle it fine once you bump up the shared memory video memory to 2gb

Ivy i3's can handle such a resolution. The IGP in AMD tends to do a better job of handling it with less need for CPU utilization. Personally, I am not a fan of IGP in general. I would rather have a discrete GPU.

So is the 5600k a better solution than the i3-3240 for my purpose?

I would say so but not the K version go for the a10 5700 since its lower power consumption and lower heat only get the k if planning to oc which is very unlikely since your building a mini itx build

For HTPC, I would probably go with an APU over an i3.

Well it won't really be a HTPC. Main uses are:

Internet Browsing
HD Video and Movie playback
Very little photoshopping (to none)

you could always move away to a micro atx htpc silverstone makes them

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=283

this way you could change the board to a88x board without lil cost but have a option of going for kaveri later on next year when the prices drop as kaveri gpu will be alot more powerful then trinity and future proofs your build mini itx builds will jump up the price

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/25Hgy

kaveri is said to rival a i3 in single performance on paper so far they have announced a 95w version but i bet in the second quarter they will release 65w versions

You are hooking it up to a 32" TV for HD video and movie playback. For all intents and purposes that is an HTPC. :p  My HTPC doubles as a spare WoW rig.

unfortunately the are focusing on more ipc improvements and die shrinks haswell was suppose to have a gpu compared to a gt 640 sadly that didnt happen and still couldnt compete against trinity
