The only I3's I would recommend for gaming are the ones with hyperthreading, such as the 4130. with two threads per core, they can better handle games that can use 4 "cores" better than other dual-core chips.
Even then, the only reason I'd recommend them over a FX-4300 or 6300 is for the longer upgrade path on the intel platform.
We are stuck with AM3+ for at least another year from what I have seen in the Steamroller thread. We will get a refreshed piledriver and that is it.
are you sure as far as i can tell am3+ is dead and there are no plans for cpu's from amd. just apu's and gpu's
am3+ will be supported until 2015, the road map doesn't show any cpus in 2014, because there is no need for any cpus , fx-8350 is doing great in current gen games, in bf4, crysis3, bf3, MOH war fighter, call of duty black ops 2 and currently call of duty ghosts, it out perfomed all i5s including i5 4670k, I can link the benchs for all these games, fx 83-- was designed for this day and age, and that was predicted, while some guys used to mention weak single thread of 8350, these guys can witness the glory of this cpu in all current AAA tittles, I presume no cpu will be released in 2014, in 2015 AMD will for sure release the final am3+ socket cpu codename excavater, and then will go for am4 since DDR4 will be relevant until then, buy an fx 6350 or fx 8320 if you can, these cpus are epic really, I love my fx 8350
