Which would be better for hardcore gaming. Obviously i5 is better, but will having i3 prevent me from doing most hardcore gaming properly?

depend on what is the rest of your system, but if you plan on playing on ultra go with i5

Any sort of CPU intense game like battlefield 3/4 will require an I5 to be playable. If you are on a tight budget, the AMD 6300 will do too, much better than an I3 at least.

i3 won't prevent you from gaming, unless the games call for a min 4 cores.

FX 6300/FX 8320 or i5/i7 k series. I personally wouldn't consider an i3 or a locked i5. For a non overclocking Intel rig, I would probably go with an Xeon 1230/1240 v2 or v3.

The only I3's I would recommend for gaming are the ones with hyperthreading, such as the 4130. with two threads per core, they can handle games that can use 4 "cores" better than other dual-core chips.

Even then, the only reason I'd recommend them over a FX-4300 or 6300 is for the longer upgrade path on the intel platform.

We are stuck with AM3+ for at least another year from what I have seen in the Steamroller thread. We will get a refreshed piledriver and that is it.

Define "hardcore gaming"

The truth is i3s will work, but i5s are considerably better.

Never buy an i3 though since you could get a FX 6300 for the same price that's a whole lot better.

If the answer is in the context of a total budget. You will want to max out your GPU but stay balanced. If you have a tight budget AMDs FX are just fine and imo better than an i3.

are you sure as far as i can tell am3+ is dead and there are no plans for cpu's from amd. just apu's and gpu's

am3+ will be supported until 2015, the road map doesn't show any cpus in 2014, because there is no need for any cpus , fx-8350 is doing great in current gen games, in bf4, crysis3, bf3, MOH war fighter, call of duty black ops 2 and currently call of duty ghosts, it out perfomed all i5s including i5 4670k, I can link the benchs for all these games, fx 83-- was designed for this day and age, and that was predicted, while some guys used to mention weak single thread of 8350, these guys can witness the glory of this cpu in all current AAA tittles, I presume no cpu will be released in 2014, in 2015 AMD will for sure release the final am3+ socket cpu codename excavater, and then will go for am4 since DDR4 will be relevant until then, buy an fx 6350 or fx 8320 if you can, these cpus are epic really, I love my fx 8350 :love:

I think all i3's are HT. Pentium dual cores arent.

There are guys posting on here who are still gaming with Q9xxx intel cpu's,
so tho they might be due an upgrade now, its pretty obvious they have spent less on hardware. But you pays your wonga and takes your choice.;#}
