How can I tell if I have an I/O problem? I think my HDD and Optical drive are butting heads. Emachine T3104

I don't have any problem with the HDDs [I have 2] I can't write to either optical drives. I can and have read off the drives. I have tried other optical drives that are good. I have not changed this type of thing since way back in the windows 3.1 and 3.11 days. I would just like someone to give me a heads up. I "think" both are running off the same channel...

Thanks in advance
greg

you should be able to set the jumper on the back of the hhd and optical drive to cable select and be fine. Or plug the 2 HDD's in on the primary cable and the optical drive'(s) if you have 2 on to the secondary cable.

if your running a combo of hhd and OD on the same cable. From the motherboard the fist plug should be the harddrive and the plug on the end should be the optical drive. Then set the jumper for the harddrive to master/single drive and the optical drive to slave

If the optical drives are so old that they are still IDE, the write lasers may have gone bad or are misaligned. It may be time for a new one. "I have tried other optical drives that are good" - does that mean you tried a differnet drive and it worked? That would certainly mean the old ones need replaced.

It's all iDE.

The optical drives work.

Did these work previously? Does the secondary IDE channel show up properly in the device manager? Is the secondary IDE channel enabled in the bios?

I'd make sure the IDE channels are enabled in the bios. If they are, I'd check the device manager next. If the secondary IDE channel is there, you can try deleting it, then reboot. Windows will detect the IDE and reinstall it's drivers.

Other than that, not sure what would cause that.
