Basically i have a wireless g sky router downstairs that i am unable to change.

I have an av200 plug connected to that router via an ethernet cable and when plugged into the mains connects with my other av200 plug in my room on the other side of the house. This connects to a wireless n router via ethernet which is broadcasting it's own wireless network.

Now when connected to the wireless g network i get a 54mbps connection, however when connected to the wireless n network i get a 300mbps connection.

How can i be getting this speed when my av adapters only support 200mbps?

I don't pay for it so don't really get a say.

I'm confused because i would of thought the powerline adapters would limit the speed of the second router to 200mbps.

It DOES actually limit you to 200m. Likely it is actually much less than that.

The 54m or 300m number that is displayed by the wireless card is purely the speed that was negotiated between the router and the PC. It only represents how fast data can flow between the router and the pc. Just like when you connect to the 54m connection and try to get to the internet it does not actually get 54m

In your case say I would send data at 300m to someplace in the internet in a optimum case it would get to the router at 300m then the router would send it out the to the AV plug at 300m (assuming you have a gig lan port) the AVplug will throw away 100m of it at random. It now gets to your other router at 200m and again assuming you have a gig port it attempt to send it to the internet. If you only have a 2m upload it then throws away another 198m at random.
