We have had ATT DSL service for about 10 years. We have been using the same Westall Modem and Linksys Router for the same time. The highest speed available to us is "Extreme." We wish to upgrade with a new DSL modem and separate new router. Which models are recommended? Thank you.

You can almost always find them for sale on Craigslist the one I just found locally was $40. Might be a cheap way to get a backup/replacement.

Do you pay for 6 Mbps and get 3 Mbps or do you pay for 3 Mbps and get 3 Mbps?

I don't understand the question, Extreme is 6.0 Mbps the only upgrade to a faster speed is U-Verse High Speed Internet and ATT provides the equipment. If and only if U-Verse is available in your area.

att modem has a router and a switch built in...
in order to have your new att modem connecting yo a router, you would have to set the "public mode" off on the att modem
so it can act as a bridge connection to the router you will connect, of course you would have to configure the new router to have the specific settings that the att modem would have(ip, gateway, etc)
if this is what you are trying to do...

My speed generally only reaches 3.0 mbps at my address. My internet access has been cutting out and in in the past few days. AT&T finds nothing wrong. My elimating other possibilities that I am aware of, I believe my aging modem and router may be the cause. Also, my experience with AT&T serivce reps is any setting changes recommended make matters worse. Outside of update the modem and router, is there anything else I'm missing? Thank you for your help.
