I've been trying to do some research on this topic but am starting to give up and moving towards making a rash decision. I will use this monitor for PC gaming (Total war, SC2, Diablo) and also for the new Xbox One. Ideally I would like to get:

- 120hz
- <5ms response time
- 27"
- LED? (or whatever is best for what I described above.
- would like to stay under $400

So far, the ASUS VG278HE has been my front runner. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah that is pretty much it, your other choice would be BenQ XL2720T, however that is almost $450.

But do you think those specs are necessary or just over the top for what I'd use it for? I guess I'm just second guessing the specs because I've seen some people say 120hz isn't even utilized since most games can't run at 60+ frames per second.

It depends on your PC. The 120Hz lets you use the 3D technologies from NVidia at least, if that is your thing. And for gaming the 120Hz+ monitors give you better responsiveness. So I will say that you don't need it, but it will let you get more out of your gaming system. For console gaming though it is most likely a useless feature.

The 120Hz will only be useful if you have a system that can push that many frames. If not just get a regular 60Hz monitor and save yourself some money.

You will want a monitor that takes HDMI also, I believe you need it for the xbox one because it doesn't use the RGB cables any more.
