Can't make Windows use my nVidia graphics card?

Hi. Recently the hard drive in my Dell XPS 15 L502X laptop crashed, and rather than shell out the £100 necessary for a new hard drive, I replaced it with the hard drive of my brother's old laptop, a HP Pavilion G6. Now, there were various driver problems with integrating this new drive, but eventually I had everything up and running.

Problem is, I can't make my resolution go higher than 1024x786. Device manager shows that my nVidia card is detected but I can't select it in the screen resolution menu in Windows 7. It just says "Standard VGA Adapter" under display. I think Windows has installed the wrong drivers for the onboard intel chipset or something. What can I do to fix this? The biggest problem of all this is it has stopped my external monitor from connecting to the laptop for some reason.

The thing is, I either have done that or can't do that. I managed to get on to the Dell website and download the latest NVidia drivers for my card. Device manager recognises my card in its list. But for some reason Windows won't allow me to install other drivers on the intel chipset, and even if it did, I have no way of identifying what that chipset actually is because the laptop immediately installed "Standard VGA Adapter" drivers onto it. Presumably.

I have the same problem. I bought a new mobo, when i installed my msi gtx580, i can install the last Nvidia's driver but can't use the graphic card. Only use the 'Standard VGA Adapter'. try to remove it, but on the next boot, windows'll install it automatically.
I don't know what i've to do!

That means that Windows is using its own drivers for the graphics card.
That also happened when I first bought my new wireless mouse.
At first it said 'HID compliant mouse' but now it says 'Logitech M185 Wireless Mouse'
You need to uninstall whatever it is you have installed and reinstall the latest drivers straight from the NVIDIA website.
