Hi. I'm wondering if it's normal for my GPU usage to jump all the time for an example - it usually jump from 100% to 1% to like 7% back and forth really really fast - this according to Msi afterburner. I have a r9 290 and cpu is an i5-4430 3.0. Is this bottleneck? If so - how much? And it seems like I surprisingly get bad fps in games, example - in crysis 3 I get around 30 fps Everything on max including MSAA.

Solution

Yeah, 8xMSAA is a killer in this game, by dropping to 4xMSAA or 4xSMAA (best image quality, IMO) you could've gotten 45-60.

Yes, every currently-available CPU has trouble in Crysis 3, especially in the 2nd level with all the grass. Even with that awesome GPU, you need to keep MSAA on 4x or lower if you're playing games maxed at 1080p or higher. What are your full specs?

I've got a tweaked commands in an Autoexec.cfg I can share that helps smooth out Crysis 3 immensely.

And you may want to check your temps too. If your CPU is going over 70C and GPU over 95C, that's trouble.

Case: G10AC. R9 290 4GB OC 10%, i5-4430 3.0 (3.2 turbo mode), XFX proseries core edition 650 w, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, H87 motherboard. What do you mean with "Autoexec.cfg?" GPU never goes above 95C.

Aha, okay, never heard of it before :O

It's only used in the Crysis games as far as I know - really nice to have. Those temps are fine, as long as your GPU core clock isn't dropping dramatically at the same time you see the other spikes.

Your CPU is about as good as anyone can get. Here's my advice: Set all in-game settings to Very High, but for Antialiasing, use 4xMSAA or 4xSMAA (or 2xSMAA if your average framerate doesn't end up as high as you want).

Then, right-click on your desktop > New > Text Document > name it autoexec.cfg (make sure you've got extensions visible so you can change it - otherwise it will just save as autoexec.cfg.txt and won't do anything). Open the file and paste these commands:

e_MergedMeshesInstanceDist = 4
e_LodRatio = 18
e_GsmCache = 1
e_ViewDistRatio = 50
e_ViewDistRatioVegetation = 60
e_ViewDistRatioDetail = 50

Those will reduce the CPU-strain significantly without adding much noticeable pop-in.

I also advise these because they're enabled by default and reduce image quality, IMO:

r_ChromaticAberration = 0
r_Sharpening = 0

Then save the file to your Crysis 3 folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Crysis 3)

Really not sure, but the drops in your framerate should lessen considerably. You're still on Very High settings, so average framerate won't change a lot. Unless you were using 8xMSAA, in which case switching to SMAA will increase your average fps by 20-30%.
