Is it a built in sound card in the Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 or do I have to buy a sound card?

It has onboard audio. Look at the pictures and see if it has what you are looking for.

Do you know if the onboard sound is fine for gaming?

It works fine. If you want more out of your sound (EAX, digital optical, etc) you could pick up a sound card.
