Dell Optiplex 7010 Graphics Card

Hello,
I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 and i was wanting to upgrade the video card, but was wanting to make certain that it would work.
I have already upgraded the memory (24GB) & harddrive (1TB)
The graphics card that my son wants is the Geforce GTX 780 PCIE. My question is will this card work in this SFF PC? Will the power supply need to be upgraded also?

I forgot to add not only was i concerned if the card would fit physically in the SFF chassis, but also concerned if the card would make the PC run hot. I appreciate any help...thanks

I don't think the card will physically fit in the SFF desktop. Also what is the wattage rating of that Dell (the 780 requires 600W minimum) and does it have a 6 pin and an 8 pin pcie power plug (both are required)

Just to be on the same page.. you have the SSF model? The Slimline or the normal sized desktop tower? That PC is made in three form factors.

thanks for responding, I'm not sure on some of your questions.
Here is my Dell Service Tag# 3LLBSW1
Its a (Small Form Factor Desktop model)

I'm not sure about the pins (6 pin and an 8 pin pcie power plug)
were are these located on the system board? The power supply currently installed in the Optiplex 7010 is a 250w. i want to upgrade this but i don't know if they make a larger power supply for this model. do you guys have any idea about this?

The 6 pin and 8 pin plugs are on cables coming from the PSU (power supply). That power will definitely not have them nor will it handle the new card. If the PSU is a regular ATX format (most new Dell Mid towers- the one on the far right in the pic- are ATX format, I have a Dell OptiPlex 760 and apparently they went ATX slightly before that series).

The picture is pointing at the desktop but you are saying sff which is the next step down. In either case, they are slim cases and will only fit low profile cards. With this smaller form factor the best card is the 7750 which is pretty low end but will work with the included 240w(sff)/250w(dt) psu. If you want a higher end card you will need to upgrade the case and psu.

Would you think it would be OK to take this motherboard out of the desktop case and install it into a bigger tower case then upgrade the power supply. would the Geforce GTX 780 graphics card work then?

Also when buying a tower case for the motherboard do I have to get a certain one so the back ports on the motherboard line up correctly with the case?

That motherboard is proprietary to Dell meaning it will not fit in any other case than the one it's in without modifying the new case- the posts where the motherboard mount to the case would need to be moved. You may want to consider a new computer (not a Dell or HP or Lenovo for they will all be restricting you with some form of proprietary Hardware limitations). OR a different video card that will fit in that case (but of what's available in small form factor the performance will be a lot less than the GTX 780)

The mobo is not proprietary, they stopped that a couple years back. It's a standard micro atx mobo and the mobo io shield will pop off the current dell case. All cases are atx these days and any atx psu will work too.

Hey guys I have ran into problems installing the motherboard out of a Optiplex 7010 desktop computer (DT) into a Optiplex 745 tower case. I thought everything should line up, but the slots on the case are not lining up with the I/O on the motherboard. the power button connection is different also.

If i found a case from a Dell OptiPlex 9010/7010 Mini-Tower will the motherboard out of the Optiplex 7010 (DT) then fit into it?

If i bought a generic ATX case would everything line up properly to the optiplex 7010 (DT) motherboard? I was just worrying about how to connect the power button switch to the motherboard? as far as the other connections to the MB i should be ok....right.

the Optiplex 7010 (DT) case had a connection for front USB ports, but I wouldn't have to connect this if i bought a generic ATX case...would I??

The optiplex 745 is btx which is why atx won't fit. Any atx case will work, the mobo is all atx standards. If you want the front usb ports to work you will need to plug it in.

thanks for responding, as for the cable that connects from the mobo to the power button will i be able to use the same cable from the optiplex 7010 mobo to connect to the new power button on the new atx case, are these cables universal?

The case will have it's own cable from the power button to the mobo.

Hey guys received my new case and I have several questions to make sure I don't mess anything up. As stated before this is a dell optiplex 7010 motherboard going into a standard ATX case.
1. My mobo has a 4 pin power connector to power up the processor, but my new power supply has only a 8 pin processor connector, can i use ony 4 pins of this connector to power up the processor?

2. also i have some front audio connectors, power switch connector, hd connector, and reset connector that Im not sure about. the original dell case connector looks different, im sure i can use the generic cable that was included with the case but i want to post the pictures that way you guys can guide me in the right direction. I want to make sure i get the right pins connected to the mobo.

1. Yes although most psu come with a 4+4. What psu did you get?

2. Contact dell for a front panel wiring guide.

Do you think Dell would give me a wiring schematic for the optiplex 7010 ?
I guess the only connection that i need to work is the power switch connector. don't really need the power reset or HD led to work or even the front audio ports, dont need those either because i would still have the back audio ports.
