basically what i am trying to accomplish if possible is lets say as an example, play a video game on display 1 while getting sounds from the game in headphones, while on display 2 my girlfriend watches a movie with sound coming from the surround sound.
my sound specs is the stock on board sound card on the TUF sabertooth 990fx, is there a software or even piece of hardware that can do this? i was going to get the CM HAF case with the stack-able top piece to add a secondary computer system to do this, but if there's a cheaper way then thats always great

Most pcs come with realtek, in the audio manager there is a setting to separate ports. But using optical should already have a separate device showing. So you will just need a video player like vlc that let's you select which audio device to use.

To my recollection, since Windows Vista, you can only select a single audio output device. You cannot have audio from one application on one audio output and audio from a second application on a second audio output simultaneously.

i use realtek, are you talking about "make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously"? im still confused on how to use this? its checked on, the optical port is located at the top near the keyboard/mice and usb3.0 ports not near the on-board sound card near the bottom, so i guess my question is how to i set up simultaneously audio streams, i have my headphones hooked up at the front of my case but the sound still shuts off on the surround when they are plugged in

I got it to work, i went into the BIOS and i switched the on board devices config front panel setting from HD audio to AC97, windows seems to be picking up on 2 different outputs

also just in-case someone uses this as a tutorial for a dual setup for watching movies and playing games, to stop the video from crashing or self closing itself when u start a game is to change the option of outputting in OpenGL with your media player
