My Dell laptop computer has 2 SODDIM slots. I was thinking about buying another stick of RAM to boost computing power a bit. To be absolutely sure I had SODIMM RAM, I took out the RAM stick I already had and tried to put it into the second slot. To my surprise it didn't fit! So now I am confused about what type of RAM my computer can physically accept.

Any explanation would be helpful.

Are you saying it wouldn't fit at all or that it wouldn't snap down properly. Normally, you cannot occupy the top slot on a laptop's DIMM without the bottom being occupied first (the most likely explanation).
What is the Model of your laptop, we can look into ram upgrades - Dell is pretty good about that
