I'd probably recommend getting a new card, Sli 550s should perform on par with a 650 Ti Boost or so, but you'll be limited by the 1GB of VRAM

This 7870 would be a decent card at its price point (especially after rebates), performs just about the same as the 270x which is readily available at the $200 price point

You could also consider this 7870 XT which performs up to par with a stock 7950

If you can extend your budget beyond $230 ish, this Sapphire 7950 is also a great choice

New card. HD7950 for $170 (after $20 MIR): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100352...
- 1GB not enough as said
- noise much less with a single card (with good cooler)
- multi-GPU solutions have issues

The big one is that the new GCN GPU's (HD7000) are compatible with Mantle. BF4 will support that soon, and other games in the future. You can read about that, but basically it's for getting more performance out of the card (as well as hopefully avoiding game-breaking bugs that cause stuttering on the developers side).

I agree, get the best HD7000 series you can afford with 2GB or 3GB.

*You MUST have a 64-bit OS to properly use more than 2GB of Video RAM and still have enough System RAM (32-bit Windows can only address 4GB which includes BOTH the System and Video RAM and minor other things so if you have an HD7950 you'd have less than 1GB of System RAM and most games would not even run.)

Your POWER SUPPLY must be adequate. Generally as long as the PCIe connectors match you're fine like 2x6-pin (probably).

Your CPU is also a factor as that can bottleneck things. Unless it's pretty bad I wouldn't worry about it (plus games VARY in how CPU-dependent they are).

Summary:
- HD7950 for $170 after MIR (and free games)
- HD7950 has 3GB (may or may not "need" it for future games)
- Power Supply must be adequate
- 64-bit Windows a must

The biggest problem is that 7950 is out of stock
