One of my friends came to me with a netbook that has a bad hard drive, and it's been a real pain in the tush. I can't get the drive to clone do to a whopping 4kb in bad sectors -_-. And now, I have installed XP Home SP3 on a new hard drive via usb, and the origional COA comes up as "Unauthorized Key" in windows activation. Telephone activation also proves useless.

I cannot create a recovery cd with the recovery software on the system & I have downloaded 5 XP Home ISO's now which will decline the product key at different points. Any help with this BS?

OEM Windows setups are supported by the computer vendor, not Microsoft. You should try them first. The key may be tied to a specific version of the Windows XP disk, I've seen instances where a key won't work for any XP setup except the disk that came with the system originally.
