The R9-270x is basically the same as the 7870 with an o/c, the R9-280x is the same as the 7970 GHz. There is no current equivalent to the 7950, but it would basically be the R9-280.

I would recommend the 7950 over the R9-270x as it's the next step up and are only around $200-230 USD and has 3GB Vram vs 2GB. Although >2GB is not yet needed for 1080p, it may become useful in future games or multi-monitors/>1080p. Just get one with a good cooler (like mine LOL!). 7950 overclock well. eg stock 800MHz, o/c to 1200MHz. But you'll need one that is not voltage locked for that.

From what I've heard the 7950 does not have an R series equivalent.
280X = 7970, 270X = 7870, 260X = 7790
The 7950 is the card in between the 270X and the 280X (or the 7870 and 7970)

the 270x is a re-branded 7870XT (not to be confused with a normal 7870), which itself performs close to a 7950 in some scenarios.

if they costs about the same, i'd go for the 7950. note there are two editions of the 7950's as well: the normal ones and the Boost Edition which performs slightly better for a cost.

it's not clear what True Audio will give over the 7.1 surround that's already built into most mobo
