So, I used to have an issue where every once in a while when I started my computer my hdd wouldn't be recognized. Now, since upgrading to 8.1 my computer will randomly lock up. All applications will be running fine but it acts like windows desktop manager has quit working but yet it won't notify me of the case. Is this the signs of something going bad like HDD? An issue with windows 8 (like I think it is)? Or something far worse like a virus?

Solution
More than likely, it is a problem with your video card drivers and/or DirectX.

Try checking to see if your motherboard or PC maker has any roll-up packages that you needed to install before installing Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

After verifying those pre-requisites, try unintalling your video card drivers and rebooting. Then download the latest video card drivers for your system.

Solution
No crash dumps? Are you "waking" from sleep/hibernation or fresh boot?
If PSU is good, the RAM could be locking up, or [danny2000] graphics card/driver locking up acting as windows stall/freeze.

Its only occurred when I was starting from a fresh boot.

What am I looking for? On my report it says no problems reported. I do want to say something interesting. I ran a boot up scan today while I was in class and it found a virus. That could have caused the problems no?

I doubt it Bauldric, but it is good that you found a problem.

If DXDiag turned out okay and did not find any problems, then Direct X drivers should be okay.

The video card drivers, you are currently testing to see if any problem re-occurs.

It did it again this morning. I know my GPU isn't that great for this set up since I built an entirely new computer except for I didn't have money for a new GPU yet so I stole the old one from my last build since it wasn't completely outdated yet. But I upgraded my entire system to newer components. Components that weren't out when this GPU was made. Could that have caused this issue of if I were to post my computer parts up for you guys to see or would this solely be a drivers issue?

How do I do that on this site? Do I just do the usual Steal the information DxDiag and post it here or do I need to do it some way that is specific to this site?
