How can I format a CD without losing the pictures that are saved on it?

I used a CD-R to save about 500 pictures off my old PC. I'm trying to open the CD on my new PC, but it's telling me it can't open the file unless I format the disk. It's also telling me that I can't format the disk without losing all the data. Is there anyway I could go about getting my pictures off the CD?

Hi,

1) Use a product like the free version of BURNAWARE and have it Validate the burn as well. http://www.burnaware.com/download/

*When installing, make sure to ONLY check the "I agree..." part that's necessary and uncheck the other ones including the very top one for AVG software.

To use:
- insert the CD to tray (close anything that pops up unless Burnaware pops up)
- open Burnaware and click "DATA DISC" at top-left
- Maximize burnaware so it fits your screen
- find the folders/files on the right and DRAG over to the left
- *Verify and finalize are checked by default, so it will burn the disc then COMPARE the data to make sure it burned correctly. If it says it works, then you can be confident it did.

2) Once burned, make sure you...
What program did you use to save the pictures?

Is it a CD-R or CD-RW?

You should NOT be asked to format a disc with data on it already as it's not even possible for CD-R (it is for CD-RW though it shouldn't ask if it has data on it). Is there any chance you did NOT actually write the data to the disc?

I also recommend getting a USB thumb stick to do that instead if you still have issues.

Honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing. It just says CD-R on the front of the disk. I believe I just used Windows, and dragged the pictures to the BD-ROM Drive. This has always worked for me before, and it worked with every other CD-R I saved pictures on, just not this one. It just really sucks a lot since there's no other way for me to get the pictures onto this computer.

No, it was not. It's the kind you get from Walmart in a rainbow case of like 20. I have burned CDs for my car and things of that nature, so I assume it's a proper burner...

Have you tried to read the files off the CD-R from another computer? If so then that implies the BD-Burner might have issues.

It could also be a bad burn. I typically select the option to validate DVDs after they are burnt to ensure the burning was done properly. However, even doing is not 100% fool proof as I discovered one time when all indications have told me the DVD was properly burnt and validated. I deleted the files thinking they have been successfully burnt to the DVD. When trying to access my project from the DVD it was at that point I discovered the burn was not done properly since none of the files could be opened or copied to the hard drive even though the burnt DVD was validated.

Now after validating burnt DVDs I would check them by opening several of the file on the DVDs.

2) Once burned, make sure you can read the files on the same computer you burned them on in Windows Explorer (My Computer).

3) FASTSTONE Image Viewer (4.9 currently) is a really great picture viewer. www.faststone.org

4) Again, a USB thumb drive is a great way to do this as well. Format it to NTFS and just copy/paste the files/folders in Windows Explorer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K1078662

The above drive stores 8GB which is over 11x what a CD can store. It's also rewriteable and works like a hard drive.
