I received a new hard drive yesterday, seagate barracuda 1TB, and it's making a sound I can only describe as a metallic scraping type noise. The noise itself occurs randomly and only for a very short period of time (~>1), should I send the drive back or am I just mixing it up with usual hard drive activity?

Update:
I ran the seatools test (long generic) and it said the drive passed the test. The drive is only used for storage, my much older seagate drive (boot drive) makes no such noise

Test it if you want confirmation about it's state of health. As long as it's just a storage drive & not your Windows boot drive, you can test it with the drive maker's diagnostic software for Windows (SeaTools):
http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Seagate will probably ask you to test it anyway if you want to RMA it, so you may as well test it now.

I have a seagate barracuda 2tb 7200rpm and it is making the exact same metallic scraping sound randomly but only for a few seconds. Sometimes it can go hours without making the noise. I ran all the tests on seatools and it passed no problems.

Did you end up having to RMA your drive in the end or did you stick with it? Is this a normal sound?

Hi there chaosbadger,

After you have already tested the drive and the results show that it is fine, my suggestion would be to just reseat the drive. It may also be a good idea to swap ports and cables. If the issue persists, I would advise you to contact the manufacturer's Support.
