Hey all, just picked up a Sapphire 7970 OC on sale to replace my 6850, and I know that the 7970 GHz is crossfire compatible with the 280x, but I haven't had much luck finding anything on 'non' GHz cards. I'm a novice at best when it comes to this stuff, and reading all of this I have no idea if my card is in fact compatible with a 280x for when I upgrade down the road.

It is perfectly compatible with ANY 280X or HD7970. Clock rates don't matter.

what is a good idea is to match the clock speeds of the cards, its not necessary, but it helps reduce stuttering by helping the cards render frames at a more even speed.

Yeah; that actually had crossed my mind. As of right now I'll just run the 7970 at 1050 or so, but once I start struggling at 1080, hopefully the 280x will have come down in price.
