Hey folks,

This may be a beaten cow from some angles, but I find myself in an odd situation. A Russian client of mine, does not trust any cloud based solutions for e-mail and document storage and has enquired whether I could conjure up and fit an e-mail server for his small company (Under 20 accounts/no need for internet hosting/ file storage and sharing option would be beneficial).

To complicate issues further, he requires the server to be very secure and needs it to be based in Scotland, where he has opened a company but does not intend to have an office.

So here is my twofold questions:

1) Could anybody elaborate on a good entry level physical e-mail server setup and the requirements for any place that will be holding it for us? (E.g Down/Up speed). Or maybe somebody can alternatively recommend any companies that offer a turnkey solution for such a situation, ideally including the storage of our own server?

2) An alternative would of course be to persuade him of the merits of a secure cloud/internet email service. And so, as I am an utter novice in business computing, I wanted to enquire as to what high security solutions exist as opposed to the above-mentioned tedious arrangement?

Kind regards,

D

Hi,

I'm a Microsoft Exchange administrator at a large company and from what you describe Exchange is definitely not a good fit for you.
It is overly complex for what you need.

Here are some open source alternatives but they all would require a pretty detailed knowledge of Linux

I would really try and persuade the client to use cloud/internet and research the security aspects of two or three.
Talk to him about the use of SSL, certificates, TLS ... the list goes on

Go with a hosting service that provides the hardware/software and tech support, while giving you full admin access and connects only by SSL.

Bare in mind, wherever you put the server, they have to provide access to any UK security service that gets a court order to access server, unless your the NSA or GCHQ who just go and hack it ;)
