System Images and moving computers

Hi all,

Been considering getting myself a proper gaming PC recently (i.e. GTX 780 Ti, 16GB at least RAM, i7 etc etc), as my laptop at the moment, although quite powerful, is one of these annoying VAIO Zs that can't update graphics cards so a few games I want/have won't run or run really, really badly.

Whilst customising I usually found that Windows 7 professional would add at least 100 GBP onto the price. Also, I don't really want to lose all my applications etc from this computer to the next.

So my question is, if I were to take a system image of my computer at the moment, can I transfer it to a new computer? I only ask because I figure it might mess with drivers etc. so I'm not sure it will work, but if it does I'll certainly consider doing it.

Thanks,

Anthony :)

You mean to take the OS (and stuff) from your laptop and put it on the new computer?

I wish you could do that! :) I tried that once, but there's no way to do it. You really do just need to bite the bullet and buy installation disks.
And you would need to install all the programs again anyway. Copying and pasting programs doesn't work because when you install programs they specifically affect the registry. Those registry changed wouldn't be made through copying and pasting, so you need to install the stuff for it to work.

I hope that helps!

Hi,

Ok yup, figured that would be the case, thanks :)
To be honest it will probably benefit me having a clean install as the amount of unneeded stuff I have on my laptop on the moment is quite shocking :p
