As I understand YPbPr is essentially the complicated word for component cables, however my monitor only has VGA so I was wondering why it supports component. Would I need to use a component to VGA and crucially, would it be possible to use a PS3 using a component to VGA? I know you would need an external input of sound, I do have that available, it's just if the monitor will display the picture.
Thanks

The PS3 does indeed have component connectors but I am wondering if it will actually work, because using a HDMI to VGA doesn't work, but then again they are two different signal types so possibly it will work, I suppose that's all the help I need unless someone has done this already....

One last question:
I would like to use my rather nice 3.5mm headset which I use on my PC, all the tutorials I have seen use HDMI as video output. It shouldn't make a difference if I want to use the component as video out put as above? Surely i just plug in the video cable in to the PS3 and use the red and white in to the coupler and all of that?

This is a breakdown of what cables do what; DVI carries just video, HDMI carries both audio and video, Component uses the separate connection ends to carry the different signals so that you can see a component cable with three connector ends or five connector ends. The three connector ends means it's just video , the five connector ends means it's both audio (red and white) and video (blue, green, red). So with your PS3 you can use the three connectors for video and then use your headset for the audio.

PS3 has no headphone slot and its the 5 cable component
This is what I wanted to link before

http://img.game.co.uk/images/gameware/ps2componentvideocable.gif These are the PS3 component cables, I could plug the video ones in to the VGA converter I linked in this post, then with the remaining two I would do the work to get a 3.5mm headset working on there

Ok let's get this straight so we can figure out what to get for cables and connections. On the rear of the Ps3 there is 1-HDMI CONNECTION, I-Multi out connection and 1-Optical audio out correct?
This is what you need.

One end is HDMI and will connect to the Ps3 and the other end has a VGA connector to connect the monitor cabel while also plugging in the head phones to the 3.5mm jack.

Going to sound bad but I have already explored the possibility of using HDMI to VGA. Apparently due to the fact that I'm essentially trying to show a digital on an analogue monitor it won't work
