GTX 780: Unacceptable performance?

Hey, guys! So, I just got done with my new build. The final piece of the puzzle was going to be my GTX 780. Here's my build as it is today.

Motherboard: Asus Z87-Sabertooth
Processor: Intel i7 4770k
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB
PSU: Corsair CX750
Video Card: Asus GTX 780 OC with Direct CU II

The first thing I did after installing my video card was check my performance in Battlefield. I was surprised to see my usual FPS was around 55FPS dipping, at times, down to the high 20s' with lots of business happening on screen. Today I found this thread... http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1882691/battlefield-gtx780-performance-24fps.html... that details almost the exact issues I'm having with this game. I had already followed the trouble shooting steps detailed in the discussion. I unparked my CPU, disabled hyperthreading and tinkered with overclocking my GPU. None of these worked and now I find myself in the same boat as the OP of that thread. As he continued trouble shooting with no results people started saying it's likely he received a faulty GPU. Which has me thinking about the performance in other games. Guild Wars 2 has me at 20 FPS in populated cities. Arkham City dips to 50 on a regular basis (I find this odd since it's a 2 year old game. Is PhysX really that poorly optimized?) Assassin's Creed IV has me at a mix of High and Medium with AA and AO turned off to get a solid 60FPS. So, I'm just wondering if this is irregular performance for these games or did I just have overly high expectations? Ghosts is able to run 60FPS on max but that seems to be about the only game released this year that does.

Is there any tips people can forward beyond the steps I've already taken? Do you guys think my graphics card is shit or are these numbers normal? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

What are your temps like when the game is running? My first guess is the card may be throttling down because of heating issues. This may mean the cooler is poorly seated on the die, or inadequate/poorly spread thermal paste/pad.

In any case, it looks like an RMA is in your future as you cannot remove the cooler to correct that issue without voiding your warranty. If that's not the issue and you have already followed all the troubleshooting steps detailed in the other thread, then RMA is still likely.

If you have another machine available to install the card in (maybe a friend's?) you can verify that the card is the issue.

Yes I would look into new drivers, run a gpu benchmarking test and compare results. I have the 780 lightning and I get 60+ fps on bf4 at 1080p with every setting maxed out, you're card should be performing much better.

I've been watching my temps and those stay well within the safe zone during gameplay.

My roommate has a gaming rig but he's kind of stingy/protective with it. So, I doubt he'll help me troubleshoot the card.

Have you monitored temperature and clock rate of both the GPU and CPU while gaming? Sounds like a driver issue to me somewhere or something is not running at full speed.

Sometimes a CPU energy saving feature either from the OS or bios will downclock the CPU even while gaming giving you really low fps.

My AC4 is in the 40's and 50's with my 780. I have everything maxed other than "God rays" (WTH is that anyway?) I'm also running MSAAX4.

I don't have the other games you mentioned.

However my card's performance in Crysis 3 is normal (50's maxed out) so I expect my AC4 performance should also be normal.

Just something you can compare to.

God rays are the beams of sun light you see come through the clouds. https://www.google.com/search?q=god+rays&espv=210&es_sm=119&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=OmiOUvCXC-m-2QWEvoDwBg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=1319

Trying that now. I have to uninstall/redownload the whole thing. So, give me a few a minutes and I'll get back to you on the results of that step.

Seems to be doing better. The game wouldn't install to the 64bit Program Files for some reason. But my Origin is installed there and I have "use 64x" selected under Origin's settings and there is definitely a performance bump, even though it still dips down to the 50s' every now and then.

When you say "dips down" I hope that means when a lot of in game events are being rendered, e.g. a jet just crashed into a helicopter and exploded in your face while the building behind them collapses and 3 people are firing smoke grenades at you. That's like the only time my 780 dips in performance, but never falls below 50 fps and BF4. Im glad that you're seeing performance gains. Keep your eyes peeled for anymore driver updates or fixes to your problem for sure. The 780 costs a pretty penny and certainly should deliver exceptional performance so get your money's worth.

AAAAAAAAAuuuuuuuaaaaghreghhh!!!!! I'm experiencing those performance dips again. I'm getting about 30-40 FPS when I view open expanses in multiplayer maps. I'm going to try to upgrade to Windows 8.1 tonight, hopefully this will solve this issues... but I'm really at a loss for anything else I can do.
