Format and RAID 5

I just bought a Raidsonic IB-RD3640SU3 and 4 HDDs WD RED SOHO NAS 3 TB. How do I go about building a RAID (RAID 5)? Do I need to format HDDs in Windows Disk Manager first and if so, which settings do I choose? GPT/MBR? New Simple Volume or…..

Unfortunately no! There was no manual. I would obviously have checked this in the manual for setup instructions had one been provided. Thanks rvilkman. (c:

Thanks again. I have had a look at the manual you mentioned. It is for several different products - mixed up a bit. I have tried to follow the instructions (7 or 8 times). It does not work, which why I asked you guys whether I had to format the drives first.

I'll be contacting the manufacturer in the morning. It's 2 hours from midnight where I am. (c:

You have to set up the RAID 5 array. If it is a hardware array you don't do it through windows like a typical HDD. I am sure the instructions work and you are just not following them correctly... Try Youtube and watch someone setting up an array. It will take a LONG time so be patient when setting up 12TB in RAID 5 probably overnight to a day.

Good post...it's just that....

"..just not following them correctly". It is very possible that you are right. I've tried several times. At last it seemed as if might have gotten it right. The last part of the instructions consist of several screen shots that are unreadable though, so I'm not quite sure.
" It will take a LONG time so be patient when setting up 12TB in RAID 5 probably overnight to a day. " All the LEDs are lit up and blue EXCEPT the LED for "RAID 5" which is orange. So is the RAID being built now (it's been like this for about 48 hours) or is nothing happening? I kinda need like a signal to wait for. Is the orange LED supposed to turn blue.
Does it take 51 hours and 13 minutes or maybe I haven't started the process yet?
I don't really know how i'm supposed to know.
Youtube isn't really helpful. No one is showing how to set up my Raidsonic.

When it sets up the array it is similar to formatting a HDD so the light should be going. The manual should tell you what the lights mean. I am guessing it should take about 24 hours. If you are not sure start all over again.
1. Look at the light BEFORE you do anything.
2. Set it to configure RAID 5 and see if they change? I am sure there is some button or set of buttons to configure the different RAID levels.
3. See if there is any activity and it appears it is making the array (formatting).
4. Wait, and wait... as I said before it will take a long time and could be a day or two even. If you did steps 1-3 it is just a waiting game...

Hey guys

Thanks for your input.

A friend of mine just fixed the problem. I am not sure what, if anything, he did differently...but it worked so now I am up and running.

I had done exactly as you are describing.
