We bought a new win 8 machine on acer for our daughter. I took out my sata drive from old (dead) laptop which has XP on it. I bought sata wire 3.0 to hook it up to the acer via usb. I would like to be able to boot to it. How? Thanks!

If you find out how, please let me know, I am in the exact same situation you are in, except my drive is from a desk top with xp on it.
Have programs on it that are still up to date, and would like to continue running them. Have 2 drives in the old XP machine and boot off both of them right now, one came from a computer that died, and I put it in as the 2nd hard drive, and when I start the computer, I hit escape, and it allows me to boot from either drive I want to boot off of...

sorry, didnt read your original post clearly.you cant boot to xp from this drive.the drivers, including chipset drivers are different.if you are serious you will have to backup your data from that drive and do a fresh install of xp.if you just want to access tha data on this drive, you really dont have to do anything.
