I was looking at building a system with the following components:

intel i7 4770K processor
AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB graphics card
16 GB Corsair Vengeance memory

My question would be which of these ASUS mobos to use:

Z87-K
Z87-A
Z87-Pro

I intend to use the system for some casual gaming, but really want good performance, even at high settings. Is there a substantial difference between these three boards, and will a 650W power supply cover those components I mentioned?

I'd prefer not to pay for the Pro if the A or K would get me the same performance.

Solution
Of all the Z87s I've worked and built on, it's the one I chose for my own 4770K build, OCs great, handles DRAM well, runs cool, very mature BIOS - IN short the best I've come across for the money

Right then, HERE is a webpage which compares all of the Z87 motherboards

I would recommend that you get the Z87-K, there isn't much difference in the motherboards as the price rises and all you really need is a motherboard that supports your CPU and has a PCI Express x16 slot

Motherboard - Memory Compatibility
4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

As you can see it allows for '1600MHz' Memory to be installed and the 16 GB Corsair Vengeance memory uses 1600Mhz so compatibility wise everything is good :)

HERE is some information about the Z87-K

Could you please give me the model name of the PSU so that I can verify if it is a good reliable PSU and that it has the right requirements to run the AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB graphics card

Thanks for the reply - the PSU would be a Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650. I could also go with the TX750, but I didn't want to get 100W I didn't need (read somewhere that a 650 would cover the GPU).

(Nice profile pic, btw.)

Thanks for the Profile Pic compliment :) I love Doctor Who :D

Anyway, Your Power Supply should be able to handle the 290 just fine :bounce:

Hope I Helped :)

I was buying these items as part of a deal package at a computer store. They had a number of ASUS and MSI boards available, among them, the ones I listed. I always heard that ASUS was the best, but I wasn't sure if I needed the higher-powered boards. I haven't done much overclocking.

They are offering the Hero, actually. What would be the benefit of getting the Hero over the Z87-A, and would overclocking be safe?

After looking at what this thing offers, I think I'll go with it. Thanks for the tip!

It was - very helpful. I actually decided to upgrade to the one that tradesman1 recommended, after looking at all the options it offers, but it's certainly good to know that any of the ASUS Z87s can handle the processor.
