Will pre-Windows 7 games work on Windows 7?

XP games should be fine. I have just been playing Jagged Alliance (the 1st one) from 1995 that I bought on Humble Bundle and it plays fine in Win 7 but it runs with something called dos box, I imagine would need some skill to run if I had the original game disks instead of a new copy designed to run on modern systems. I also played the 1st Total war Rome in Win 7 bought in a steam sale around a year or 2 ago.
