My Dell dimension 3100 XP Windows Media Player won't play certain dvd discs

My windows media player will not play home movies I had converted to dvd. Tells me disc error or nothing at all.....just wont play.....other movies I have bought play in the computer. What is wrong, do I need some additional software?
