So my friend told me that a IGPU helps my own GPU.

I on the otherhand say this is rubbish, And please tell me if i'm wrong.
i believe once you have a GPU your IGPU will go idle and do nothing, unless you set it to main and use it, but your own GPU will then go idle. But he claims this is false and the GPU from your CPU helps out your GPU and will increase frames by quite some bit, which i do not believe nor have i ever heard of it.

What System are you using, What processor, and what GPU? If you're using a intel based system. Your friend is completely incorrect.

If you're using a AMD APU system with a HD 6670 in a hybrid crossfire, your friend is only partially correct.

It depends on what you are doing with it. For instance I use my igpu for media encoding. Some encoders will recognize the intel igpu over say the Nvidia and use it if it is enabled. As far as gaming goes no I have not seen any real benefit from it but that is not to say it sits useless all of the time.
