Hi,

I'm collecting information to build my own rig for 3d modeling and animation/rendering, platform game design and would like some feedback and information. I'm a artist and not a tech guy and have no clue what parts i need to buy.. The parts I found are from topics on this and other website(s) and inside my budget.

My budget is about 2000 to 2500 euro's.

I never build-ed a rig myself but I have some experience with taking my old systems apart and putting it together again.

The main programs I use:

maya , Zbrush 4r6(a lot), Photo-shop cs6 for matte painting/texture editing, Unity for platform game (world) dev. My old system couldn't handle cry engine or unreal engine and I would love to experiment with the free editions)

I've been working on a dell precision 670
win7 x64
dual Xeon Y9655 system board (one socket filled)
Xeon 2,8Ghz dual core
nvidia quadro fx 4300 512mb graphics card.
12gb ram ddr ( I don't know exactly what type)

I liked my old system and worked on it for six years at least 12hrs a day without any problems accept software compatibility problems with the graphics card and very slow renders. I want to end up with something better in the same price category.

I don't need anything outside the casing!
I need a dual or more monitor system,

I'm not planning to play games on this system only test my own build levels and animation shorts
the system must be capable of handling multi million polygons in the maya viewport.

It also must be x64

_____________________________________________________________________________

I have a few options so far inside my budget:

Casing:

cooler master storm trooper
or
cooler master storm stryker
or
Antec p280

Question: which one is the best with air flow and space/upgrade options?
Any other recommendations? I need to install about six hdd's with project files and backups two or more(in the near future) graphics cards

systemboard:

asus p9x79 pro socket 2011
or
asus maximus vI socket 1150
or
Asus Z87 deluxe socket 1150

which one is the best?
Any other recommendations? There are fans installed in the casings but what are they for?

Also at this moment I have money for one of the cpu's in my list and want to be able to upgrade this in the future.

cpu

intel core i7 4470k quad core 3.5ghz 8mb socket 1150
or
intel core i7 4820k quadcore 3.7 ghz 10mb socket 2011
or
Intel Core i7 4930K 6core 3.4 ghz 12mb socket 2011

questions:Are these better then xeon? What does the K stand for? If I buy the p9x79 pro isn't the 6-core over the top? I need multitasking capability's between my different softwares. With the xeon dual core 2,8ghz cpu this worked quite nice.

Psu

corsair hx750

I couldn't find the amp of these (I found on the internet that these make a lot of noise and that is the only thing I hated on my dell ,12hrs fan noise a day!)

Question: more info on other psu's please

Graphics card

Nvidia quadro fx K4000
or
nvidia gtx 580
or
nvidia gtx 780 ti(newest)

I read there is not much difference between gtx and quadro cards these days. Is the gtx comparable with the k4000? In a few months I can upgrade to a second grapics card.

Cooler:

H100i liquid cooler. How many of these do i need?

Question: Do I need other cpu, gpu, hdd ram coolers next to the h100i?

what should i search for if I want the system completely water cooled. I found those Highflow sets but is this necessary or is it over the top?

ram:
Can I re-use my old ones in on the motherboards in my list or do I have to buy new ones?I don't know what type they are except for ddr and cant find it on the modules but I payed around 350 a module at dell for these a year ago and would like to recycle them
I have 12gb and need up to about 16 or 24 or the max of the board.

Do all modules have to match or only the pairs?

hdd:
wd black 2tb 7200rpm

I have a total of 4 other smaller 1tb and 500gb 7200rpm disks already that need to be installed.

_____________________________________________________________________________

What else do I need?
like cables and such.
What tool set should I buy?
And what anti static strab is the best?

Any other recommendations would help. I need this system as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time and afford in advance

Marc

Solution
if you are not custom water cooling it you will need to get a CPU cooler. Most people these days go with the Corsair H100i for that. remember to select a solution!

your build is currently a little confusing and incompatible, give me the site you use to put together your build or where you live exactly and I will design a build plan for you to get the best for your money :D

Do you have the time to explain to me what makes the parts i listed incompatible? Maybe i can learn something from it.

Hi mcdonh,

Sorry, I received your last post but anwered it with my iphone and something went wrong. I got the h100i.

I got my order today and did put it together, But I have to wait a few days until the ram arrives before I can test it.

I have a few questions left that i cant find in the install instructions.

1: there are a few led cables/plugs in the 750 casing, hdd led, power led , reset led but i cant find where to connect them on the asrock mainboard. update: found it on page 29 already
2:there are A lot of cables delivered with the PSU but all the cables i need for my rig are standard in the case (Update: stupid question, those are the standard cables from the PSU)..

Thanks, the system looks cool, I hope it runs like it :)

I got my parts from maxict.nl and sicomputers.nl

Sorry I have been taking a bit of a holiday, hope you are still here ;)
You can't build a custom loop off the h00i so unless you get rid of that you will have to run 2 loops in your system, get back to me :D
