Currently running 16x 2 way sli 780's at stock w/ a 1440p 60hz monitor. I originally planned on going 3 way sli but my motherboard will bump it down to 8x with 3 cards. I want to have that crisp 60 frames for a while so can someone give me some information on if this is a good idea or a bad idea? What kind of performance gain would I see?

I have an amd 8350 oc to 4.4 and no i have not overclocked my 780's yet. Honestly I only overclocked the cpu because of the easy msi genie overclock ability and my first ever liquid cooler. Biggest issue I had with old system was the heating of my room from the gpu and cpu loads while running a 1440p. So with my new build in mind I wanted the bring the heat down, so far these cards only reach about 60c on almost all of my games, highest so far 70c and that was with a video card stress test going for an hour. With better ventilation and a better case now in my room the heat from the pc isnt even noticeable so thats why I was looking at a 3 card setup vs overclocking. Also as a test on my mother board I had the cards setup in the 3 way sli pattern its able to do and noticed a 10c increase on the middle slotted card so maybe keep that in mind also?

Forgot to say framerates, on higher demand games like skyrim mods and such i drop to 30's and alike with unoptimized games. I like running full everything that was the idea with buying 780's right out the gate and the 1440p. Just would like some idea's on what people think and if it would be worth the investment.

Man one other thing I forgot to mention is the cards are not the standard 780's these are the evga superclocked editions

Thanks for the information was very knowledgeable, this morning spent alot of time looking at my game library and seeing what games were sli optimal and its very little to be honest. Tried applying profiles and seen very little gains vs gpu usage's already. Maybe one day I'll get a 3rd but for now I will be holding off. Thanks again for taking an interest in my post.

When you get the frame dips are your GPU's running at or near 100%?That's a lot of GPU strength for a FX8350. With light OC. Before spending anymore on GPU's I'd make sure it's not your CPU causing the frame dips.

I havent really seen it over 50-60% usage, and my cpu load isnt even close to maxing either. Recently my games have been Defiance, Castle Story, and Nether which non are optimized nearly enough and some in early access still

If your only at 50%-60% usage the last thing you need is more GPU horsepower. When you look at your CPU usage are you looking at each core? You might have a few cores being maxed out and some hardly being used at all. You might need a serious overclock on your CPU to get your GPU usage up.
