Questions about CPU and OCing.

I'm currently using a AMD Phenom II x6 1090t 3.2GHz processor (stock speed) and a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 videocard. I have a feeling that my cpu is a little weaker compared to my GPU, so I was thinking about OCing it. I don't have alot of experience with overclocking, even if this is not the case, how much should I OC my CPU to gain a nice performance boost (I mostly play CPU heavy games)? Also, should I be disabling specific programs when OCing my CPU, like CnQ?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate all the help on this website.

Solution
Try it at stock, if its not, slowly start to raise it. I bet you have to go up a bit, but shouldn't require a ton of increased voltage. if you want start at 3.6, and work your way from there.

I already bought, and installed a new, better heatsink. Should I instantly boost up my clock speed to 4.0GHz= Do I also need to boost up my voltage or is stock voltage fine for 4.0

Alright, I´ll try 3.6 first, and then slowly go up to 4.0. How will I know if my CPU can handle the overclock without changing the voltage, is there any program out there?

Alright, is prime95 a good program to test my CPU temps, I heard great things about it

Alright, thanks for the information, I´ll come back in a day with information if it worked without any problems or not (gotta reapply thermal paste, and I even might install a new heatsink just to keep my CPU cooler).

Alright I tried some testing around, and it seems to be stable at 3.8GHz, and 1.5 Voltage. Max heat on CPU is 65 degrees after one hour of prime95 testing. It crashed on 4.0GHz, with 1.5 and I didn´t want to go higher with the voltage, it already was too high imo.

Is this ok or not, and will the 0.2GHz difference (4.0 to 3.8) have a huge change on my performance or is it minimal?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Could I still get 4.0GHz, by maybe, turning the voltage higher? Or is it too risky? Also I disabled CnQ, Power Boost and C1E support, is this ok?

Edit: Alright my final stats are 3.8GHz and 1.4875V, it seems to be running stable, and if it crashes I'll turn it back to 1.5V, thanks for the info!
