BSOD and reg error HD dead?

Today I restarted my PC with the restart button because I'd knocked the mouse and keyboard overnight while sleeping so they weren't responding.

Upon restart I got a BSOD post-bios with error: C0000218 referring to the registry. I can enter bios, boot in safe mode or last good settings and still get the BSOD and which auto restarts after about 3 seconds. Checkdisk will sometimes try to run and it gets to about 40% before BSOD, or immediate BSOD if I skip it. My backup/boot disk for windows vista says it is not compatible with windows vista installed on the HD.

What I have done now is ran off my backup/storage HD which was my old HD, (so my new HD was an image of this drive). This has booted fine despite being so old it still loaded up MSN messenger. It allowed me to access all of the corrupted HD so in the meantime I've backed up all my files to an external HD as I haven't done so for about a month.

The HD is a WD caviar green 750gb and has been fine since I got it approximately 18 months ago. Is it dead or is there a way I can fix it manually from my working HD?

Any help appreciated!

OHHH YEAA Do me a favor.

Click on Function -- Advanced Feature -- Raw Values -- Select " 10 HEX"

Now check both drives. I'm telling you right now BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA and if they drives are still in warranty get them RMA'ed if they are not Get new drives. They are going bad. Both of the drives you have attached there are. This one seems pretty bad. Get a Pic of the other one as well. At this point the more you use it the worse it will get so if you don't have a drive to backup to buy one OR when you RMA select the option where you get the Drive First before having to return the bad drive. This way you can use that to copy all your data too then return the bad drive.

Now you won't be able to clone or anything. You WILL have to...
Is the hard drive in question connected as well while you are running off your old hard drive? If so download and install the Crystal Disk Info in my Siganture and tell me what it says.

Also if you can try to boot from the new hard drive (The one with the issues) and right when you turn it on keep pressing on and off F8. Should get a boot menu screen. Highlight the "Disable automatic restart on system failure. Then you will see the FULL BSOD. If you can take a pic and post.

It sounds like 1 of two things are going on. 1) Drive is failing or 2) Some thing is corrupt

Hi, I am able to access the drive and have attached the report from crystal disk. I shall try and change the boot settings to get the full BSOD and post that up also.

Sorry buddy but there isn't anything else here to be said but backup and replace.

I don't have an option for '10 hex' just '10 Dec', '10 dec 1-byte' and '10 dec 2-byte'.

Oh that's never what you want to hear! The one I posted the first pic of was the one that won't boot, the one I'm posting off now is the old one and I sort of knew it was on the way out a few years ago which is which I got a new one. It started to buzz a lot and freeze and restart occasionally. Not sure about the warranty on the WD750gb, it is literally less than 1 month over if its 2 years, but I have a feeling it was 3 years. Going to be a new copy of windows as well though unfortunately since I don't have the installation discs. Fortunately I have been able to backup everything important. Attaching the other drive picture to this post.

No need to buy a new copy of Windows. As long as you have a valid product key you can download a free, perfectly legal copy of Windows from Microsoft and burn it to a CD.

What version of Windows do you need? Do you need help finding your product key?

I thought you had to pay for a new copy of windows anyway I didn't know you could download it? The whole reason I simply cloned my HD last time was because I didn't want to pay (and I wonder if it carried over some bugs in the registry??

I'm ok with my product key, just had to activate it again as I'm on the old drive, if it is just the one in 'system', but I don't have a gold sticker key.

More info on the downloads here: http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/
You don't need the sticker either. Windows stores the key in the registry and it can be retrieved with "Belarc Advisor" along with all of your other software product keys.

Ah that's great thank you. I need vista 64 but searched for it and found the ISO (3 parts). For some reason belarc sounds familiar so I will get that to find my product key also! Many Thanks

You're quite welcome!

Good luck!

The HD was out of warranty with the retailer I got it with, but in warranty with Western Digital so I was able to get it RMA'd

Creating the ISO was simple enough and my product key from belarc advisor worked so everything is sorted on a new driver now, thanks
