Installed Windows on new drive, old key useless

Hi all!

I just got myself a SSD, and i decided to use my old HDD as a Storage drive, and install windows on the SSD, which i've done. However now Windows is complaining that the Product Key is "Invalid", so i'm not able to activate windows on the SSD. I got through the installation without problems using that old key, but it won't activate in Windows. I still have the system installed on the old disk, so if there is a way to deactivate the key, i could do so, but i don't know of any way. Any help is appretiated!

Thank you in advance!

  1. Your copy of Windows was licensed to a particular PC. Trying to install it a second time, on different hardware, is against the terms of the license.

    But..
Call Microsoft and tell them exactly what you did. (start at http://support.microsoft.com/ or http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/)
They may decide that you are really just upgrading a single part (the HDD) and let you use your copy of the OS. If enough of the system changed, they may decide that you really need to purchase a new copy (license).

Okay, thank you. I'll give them a call :)

EDIT: Didn't make it in time. They closed their support line while i was waiting... I'll try again Monday...
  3. I got the advice to call their computer managed Windows registration service, who accepted my registration! Thank you for the help!
