Intel i5 4670k temp without video card

Hi all,

I was just wondering if it would make a difference in temps with or without a video card.

Some say that if you have a Haswell CPU and don't have a video card, it would heat up more since the CPU will be using it's integrated GPU or something..

Please advise,

Thanks

yeah that should be fine, and those temps aren't terrible, just seem a bit high. Now that we know its Prime you'll be fine where you are.

Yes, it will run slightly hotter.

But even with the stock cooler, you'll be fine.

I used mine (without video card) as a processor and video card when I waited for the GTX 780 Ti to reach the market. It didn't reach more than 50C when gaming, though this was with a Hyper 212 Evo cooler. With the stock cooler you won't reach more than 70C. 90C is the cap.

Yes it will run warmer with onboard video, not it would not be worth buying a video card just to keep the temps lower. If you don't need a video card for your daily activities, then just use the onboard. It won't overheat even with the stock heatsink.

Thanks for the replies! My R9 280x Vapor-x is coming this weekend...

So would there be a significant decrease in my temps if I use a video card? I currently run 26-33c on idle and 70-80c on full load OC'd to 4.0Ghz..

Update: I use Corsair H80i CPU cooler btw..

I would expect a 10C drop. (If your integrated graphics runs at stock V.)

A trick: disable integrated graphics in BIOS to save power and get lower temperatures

That is a bit high of a temp using that cooler consiering you're cpu is only OCed by 200 mhz. Not alarming or in any danger of hurting anything, but if the temp doesn't go down after you add the card I would consider reinstalling the waterblock, and redoing the thermal paste.

He might have the voltage unnecessarily high for a 40 multiplier, he didn't mention so we don't know

Hi,

I apologize for the lacking information. @ 4.0Ghz, I only changed the Core Multiplier and Cache ratio to 4.0 and everything else is on auto. @ full load, I see my core voltage tops 1.245(I know it's too high. any suggestions?). - I am uncomfortable using manual voltages for day-to-day use since I can't make use of the lower state voltages. I use a Gigabyte Z87x-UD3H mobo which apparently does not have an adaptive voltage option.

Indeed my temps are higher that what others claim to be.. I've read forums about the back-plate on the H80i was loose and caused uneven contact between the CPU and block. So I added rubber washers between the backplate and the mobo as well as reseated the block. Apparently I don't have an aftermarket thermal paste so I reused the sock TIM of the H80i. I noticed a decrease of 5c,

5C isn't a bad decrease, is that running prime95 or just regular usage. That was what scared me if you were hitting 80C just under normal load (not Prime or other torture test) then you might melt the thing if you every actually maxed the computer. Can also try and move your radiator around some and see if you can get more air to it in your case.

Crap.. another missed information.. I used Prime95 small FFT and IBT very high settings.

I reused the old thermal paste(1 week-old) after reseating.. is that OK?

Should I disable it right away or wait after I get my video card?

Please advise

Last time I checked, Prime95 can damage Haswells.

I've heard nothing about prime hurting Haswell cpus, I mean yes if it goes over temp its bad for them, but the same can be said for all cpus. Maybe he knows something I don't but there are way to many people who use it and not enough chatter about fried cpus for that to make sense to me.

If you disable it before you get the video card, you won't have any video. I meant: disable after getting the GPU.

Lol. Why do you call me a troll based on the fact that I recommended that he turns the IGPU off when getting his PCIe GPU?
