Legal download of Win 7 to burn on a DVD - new build?

Hi builders!

So I finally have all the parts for my build ready and went to my local software store to grab a cheap copy of Windows 7 (not sure if I want Win 8 quite yet). I live in a college town and the only way to buy Win7 was as an upgrade to existing Windows. Clearly that is not an option with a new build. I wanted to just download the system online (legally) and burn it onto a DVD myself, but cannot find where to do this.

Is it just me or is this some weird Microsoft anti-piracy policy? I wanted to build my pc today to play with it over the weekend, so it's quite urgent... :(

Thank you!

I'll echo what USAFRet posted earlier, I can't find any site where I would recommend you purchase a Win 7 product key from. I would not recommend any of the eBay or product key sites (likely to get more than you bargained for like viruses and malware, or nothing like an invalid key).

Do you have a valid product key to use? If so, you can get Win 7 from the official sources. See below:

Keep in mind that there are no free, legal versions of Windows 7. To use it, you must purchase a license.

Tom's Forums do not support software piracy.

This is actually quite odd. None of the majors sell a download version of Win7. They will gladly ship you the DVD (minimum 2 days), but nothing to purchase and download immediately.

Newegg, Amazon, TigerDirect, CDW....nada
Still looking.

Of course, I do want to purchase a license. The thing is I cannot get my hands on a legal one online. Ideally I'd get a product key direct from MSFT website and download an ISO to burn. That does not seem to be an option anymore. Thoughts?

I appreciate that. It is odd, and fairly a poor policy on Microsoft's side. I just came home from local Best Buy (that has a Windows Store) and was told no one can carry Windows 7 in a brick store anymore. I am really not sure I want to switch to Win8... :/

I think it's more of pushing Windows 8 rather than anti-piracy.

Well I might give the Windows 8 a shot but it really felt worse than Windows 7. Well, Newegg offers 1 business day shipping, so I might as well get it there...
