Hi I am new to the forum. About 3 weeks ago my system started crashing games and stating that the display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered. I have read through many reasons why but mine is not interfering with internet ie Browser games and DVD's. It just freezes games and then the screen go black I can only get out by CTRL-ALT-DEL. I have looked at CCC and uninstalled and re installed older version. I have de selected Overdrive no joy. The temp of card is as it has been since having the unit in 2008 abt 77oC. All drivers albeit CCC are up to date.

My system details are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Asus P5Q Deluxe (Intel P45 Chipset)
Mem: 4.0GB Corsair DDR2 600MHZ XMS2
Hard Drive 500GB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s
Optical Drive 22 x DVD RW DL S-ATA
ATI RADEON HD4870 X 1
S/Card Creative X-Fi Extreme 7.1 Audio
Windows Vista 64 Bit
PSU 580W Hiper Type-M Silent

I am not a very hands on PC user but can anyone point me in a direction as to what of might happened?

Thanks for reply. If so is that an easy remove and replace. Forgive my ignorance but we are not talking abt the graphics card this is something else. If not graphics card what sort of cash are we talking about. My system has been without probs for 5 years so need to make sure I or someone else does he right repair

As I posted earlier I think only the GPU is culprit here, so replacing it will solve the problem hopefully. And yes if the GPU is faulty then its that easy to remove and replace. But if you want to go with a NVidia based GPU, then you have to remove and clean all the drivers and the registry entries too related to AMD. And obviously have to install latest NVidia drivers.

The cash will depend upon your budget, you can spend as many or as little you want or afford.

One more thing that is your PSU, I doubt the quality of it, so its better to replace that also with a decent one like XFX, Corsair, Antec, or Seasonic. A 550-600W will be sufficient for you.

If you want to buy a new GPU, then look at the required power first. An example : GeForce GTX 770 - requires 42 Ampere on +12V rail and a 600W PSU minimum
So if you buy that GPU you must need a PSU that provides minimum 42 Ampere on +12V rail.

Your current PSU power specs : +3.3V@30A,+5V@36A,+12V1@20A,+12V2@18A,-12V@0.8A,+5VSB@2.5A which is not enough for a modern day GPU, and the greatest problem with cheap/nonrated PSU that they wont supply clean power, and that will definitely damage your valuable components.

What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load:

•bad 3D performance
•crashing games
•spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
•freezing during gameplay
•PSU overload can cause it to break down

One question if the PSU was faulty on its own would that cause games to crash and not have an impact on the internet (Browser Games) and DVD movies. Is there a way to tell if it is the PSU at fault. As you can imagine I would prefer if possible to pay for one or other and if PSU then it would be one. Any test I can do to check PSU. I dont want to buy GPU to find out that it is a PSU issue. BTW thanks for support and advice very much appreciated.

Look, for your convenience it is best to borrow a GPU and PSU from someone to test and to isolate the issue.

And to answer your question, more power is needed when you play games then you are on internet games or watching movies or what ever. So if the PSU has lost his leg and not providing enough power to run games, then it will freeze, and will do the issues you are having now. Same goes to the GPU also.

Its hard to test a PSU for fault, one way is the paper clip test, that will determine if the PSU's fan is spinning or not. Another way is to test it with a Multi Meter, looking for the exact output voltages. But the PSU will act different when in full load, I mean with all the components plugged in.

As I said earlier the PSU of yours is not of a trusted brand, so faulty or not faulty, its better to replace it.
