Hey everyone,

I just purchased 4*4GB of Corsair ddr3 ram. I have 8 slots on my motherboadd (gigabyte). Does it matter how I install it?

Solution
You need to keep them in paired slots. You should have lanes A and B (quad channel) or A, B, C, D (dual channel). It depends on if your motherboard supports quad channel or not. If it does, you should put each stick in lane A1, A2, A3, and A4. Otherwise, use A1, A2, B1, B2.

Thanks for the quick feedback -

My motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 -- 4x PCI-E 2.0 x16. I either lost the manual or never had it. Each slot is labeled as ddr3 on the motherboard and numbered 1-8. Also, the slots are either grey or black. When I removed the previous ram they were in the grey slots. Should I just do this as well?

I am quite the novice at all of this...

From the users manual, pg 16-17: http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-x79-up4_e.pdf

"When installing the memory, make sure to begin with the first socket of each channel, such as DDR3_1, DDR3_2, DDR3_3, and DDR3_4."

I think I got it - I put the ram into the two grey slots. My computer is stating that I currently have 16GB and saw on another forum that using the same colors is the way to go dual channel. If you think I am wrong please let me know. Thanks again!

You have 4 sticks.
You have 8 slots

Put the 4 sticks in the same colored slots.
